Fuel Saving Tips

by SGMotoring.com

1) Use lower grade fuel

For most cars these days buying higher octane petrol is a waste of your money . The regular unleaded Ron95 will be just fine for your car.

By avoiding high octane petrol you’ll be saving a large amount of money over a period of time as high octane petrol is always more expensive at the petrol stations.

2) Travel light

If you are not specifically hauling around some heavy materials, make sure you remove it from your car.

Do not use your car boot space as a storage box. The more weight that you carry in your car, the more fuel your car will consume.

3) Check your wheels alignment

You should pay attention to your wheel alignment of your car as well. Improper alignment will cause a certain amount of engine drag, which will increase petrol consumption.

If your steering is pulling to towards one side, send your car for wheel alignment.

4) Rotate your tires

Regularly rotating and checking your tires for uneven wear will save you on both tires and petrol costs.

If your tires are showing signs of balding you’ll want to replace them immediately since the better your tires are the better fuel consumption you’ll see.

5) Check tire pressure

Purchase a tire gauge and check your car’s tire pressure every month. If your tires are under-inflated they can reduce the fuel efficiency of your car. Under-inflated tires wear out faster, which again contributes to higher petrol consumption.

6) Turn off air condition when weather permits

Using the air conditioning in your car will reduce your fuel economy by 10 to 20 percent.

When you first get into your hot vehicle try to drive with the windows open to let out the hot air and let in a fresh breeze. The air conditioner will work more efficiently and cool faster if you let out the hot air first.

When the weather permits or when driving in the night when the air is much cooler, turn off your air condition and wind down the windows.

7) Avoid jack rabbit start

Accelerate steadily when the light turns green. The faster that you accelerate the more petrol that you are going to consume.

It may be tempting to accelerate and race away from the traffic light, so do not fall into this trap and you can save up to 20 percent in fuel costs.

8) Avoid sudden braking and moving off

Try to avoid braking suddenly or starting abruptly especially during traffic jams.
Hard acceleration consume more petrol and the sudden braking that follow simply waste the energy from that acceleration.

9) Do not keep vehicle idling for longer than 5 minutes

Try to avoid letting your car idle too long, even during early mornings when you try to warm up the car. During idling the engine is kept running at around 500-800 rpm but the vehicle is not moving.

New cars are designed for you to be able to start and drive away immediately without any need to warm up.

10) Use the right grade of engine oil

Make sure that you are using the right grade of oil that is required by your car. Oil grades are measured in viscosity, which determines how much the oil can resist flow.

Check the owner’s manual that comes with your car for more information about the grade of oil that is required by your car.

11) Regular maintenance of vehicle

One of the best things that you can do is to keep your vehicle as well tuned as you possibly can.

This means taking note of those regularly scheduled maintenance checkups, change your engine oil regularly and maintenance of serviceable parts.

Replacing a clogged air filter can improve the mileage that you get with your car by up to 10 percent.

The cleaner that your fuel filter is the more efficiently your vehicle is going to run, saving you more money in fuel costs.

12) Keep a fuel log

Use the petrol logging utility in SGMotoring.com to help keep track of your petrol cost and fuel consumption of your car. Alternatively, invest in a small notebook and pen for your car and write down all your petrol cost and distance travel.

Start to develop the habit of knowing exactly how much that you are spending in fuel costs.
